Developing Leader Spotlight: Rising to New Heights

If you work in commercial real estate in the Piedmont region of North Carolina, it’s likely that you know Coleman Team, CCIM, a 2015 recipient of the NAIOP Developing Leaders Award. This young professional has made his mark within the local market and the NAIOP North Carolina Piedmont Triad chapter. The Triad Business Journal recognized Team in its 2015 “40 Under 40” list of young real estate leaders. As a member of the NAIOP Corporate Board of Directors, his impact in the industry is now expanding across North America.

Coleman TeamTeam has been actively involved in NAIOP for 7 years, and credited by his chapter for making a difference from the very beginning. He served as the 2015 president of the NAIOP North Carolina Piedmont Triad chapter and was on the planning committee for the 2015 North Carolina NAIOP State Conference.

A co-founder and partner of Linville | Team Partners, Team focuses on office, life science/biotech, health care and investment properties, assisting landlords, tenants and investors in the leasing, acquisition, and disposition of commercial real estate. From publicly traded institutions to individual office users, his expertise also includes build-to-suit development advisory, historic property renovation, syndicate investment real estate, and the strategy and implementation of land assemblage.

In 2014, Team also co-founded and became a managing partner in a private-equity based real estate investment fund, Front Street Capital, where he is involved in the areas of investment sales, capital markets and the management of individual and large investor relationships. We talked with this high-flying young leader to see what motivates him and what keeps him grounded.

NAIOP: How did you become interested in the commercial real estate industry?

Team: My family has been in the real estate industry as long as I can remember, so I grew up learning the world of investment real estate and commercial development. It continued as a passion through college and into my first career as a broker.

NAIOP: How has being a member of NAIOP helped your career?

Team: I have been a NAIOP member since the first year in my career, and as a younger professional in the industry, NAIOP provided a great platform for gaining industry knowledge and networking with our market’s top leaders. NAIOP also provided me a leadership opportunity through service on the board early in my career. I was able to dive deeper into national market trends and further understand the effects of NAIOP’s lobbying efforts across our entire industry, both locally and nationally.

NAIOP: What are some of the most rewarding aspects of your job?

Team: As the owner of a real estate firm, one of the most rewarding aspects is having a direct impact in creating the culture of our office, both internal and external, and watching that culture form a brand and reputation in the marketplace. Establishing a brand from the ground up and building a unique work environment for all of our employees makes every day a fun day to be at work.

NAIOP: Who has inspired or influenced you?

Team: Without question, my father. He is the one who taught me the ins and outs of the commercial real estate profession, especially how at the end of the day my character and reputation are more important than any real estate deal. He taught me how to be a leader, how to build a business based on honesty, and how to balance my life so family will always come first.
