Where Do Millennials Live?

The very first post on this blog explored what part of the country the growing millennial generation was calling home. The nation has experienced much change since that first post on the Market Share blog in September 2014, but that Arlington, Virginia, is ranked as one of the best cities for millennials has not.

Niche recently released its ranking of the best cities for millennials – the largest generation, nearly 80 million people ranging in age from 20 to 36 – based on the number of fellow millennial residents, job opportunities, cost of living, and access to bars, restaurants and coffee shops. These cities are ranked based on data from the U.S. Census, FBI, BLS and other sources.

  1. Arlington, Virginia
  2. Cambridge, Massachusetts
  3. San Francisco, California
  4. Alexandria, Virginia
  5. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  6. Seattle, Washington
  7. Ann Arbor, Michigan
  8. Berkeley, California
  9. Sunnyvale, California
  10. Sandy Springs, Georgia

Liveability says that with 80 million people – and the 16-year span of millennials at that – it’s not one size fits all. Using Census data and applying logic (a 20 year old is vastly different than a 36 year old), they delineated the highest concentrations of millennials by age group.

Highest concentration of 20-24 year olds, typically clustering in college towns:

  1. College Station, Texas
  2. Provo, Utah
  3. Bloomington, Indiana
  4. Davis, California
  5. Lawrence, Kansas
  6. Gainesville, Florida
  7. Jacksonville, North Carolina
  8. Tallahassee, Florida
  9. Iowa City, Iowa
  10. Tempe, Arizona

Highest concentration of 25-34 year olds, the upper half of the generation likely living on their own:

  1. Somerville, Massachusetts
  2. Arlington, Virginia
  3. Cambridge, Massachusetts
  4. Boston, Massachusetts
  5. Alexandria, Virginia
  6. Portland, Maine
  7. Washington, D.C.
  8. San Francisco, California
  9. Minneapolis, Minnesota
  10. Denver, Colorado

Highest concentration of 30-34 year olds, older millennials starting families and considering suburbia:

  1. Somerville, Massachusetts
  2. Alexandria, Virginia
  3. Arlington, Virginia
  4. Atascocita, Texas
  5. Sunnyvale, California
  6. Gaithersburg, Maryland
  7. Cambridge, Massachusetts
  8. San Francisco, California
  9. Washington, D.C.
  10. Denver, Colorado
